How to be a respectful Couponer

Today there was a coupon offered by Shreddies cereal on facebook for a free box of cereal. WHAT. A. GONG. SHOW!! As they were doing the final tests on the link, it "went live" for a few minutes and people went CRAZY. There were people ordering it when it wasn't released, people were being incredibly rude, and frankly it was embarrassing. IT'S CEREAL!

This leads to todays post, simply because I am so disgusted with the way some people were acting (and this includes a group of "Canadian Freebies" that I follow on FB. I am consifdering sending her a note and no longer following)

Here are the general guidelines on how to be a respectul and repeat couponer.

1. DO NOT YELL AT CASHIERS! Please understand that they are not personally attacking you for using coupons, lots of cashiers do not understand (or know) the store's policy on coupons. More training is needed. If you encounter an issue at the till (and you aren't trying to scam the store - this is bad), then politely ask to speak to a manager. Ranting and raving will only make them defensive, and make you look like a lunatic.

2. Don't clear the shelves (if they're full). It's rude. Go to a couple stores to prevent doing this, especially if you have a tom of coupons. Most of the time you can price match, so grab a flyer on your way out.

3. Manners, manners manners. People will bemore likely to help you (rain check, re-stock, checking the back for more stock, etc) when you use the words "Please and Thank you".

4. Share. Now this one is a bit tricky, but if you have a coupon for, say CoverGirl, and you don't wear makeup, put it aside to trade or give away. I quite often will pull a coupon out of my binder to give to a random person who is buying something I have coupons for. Ask them to pay it forward. Most people agree.

5. Remember, it requires work to save money, but you are choosing to do this. It won't always go your way, but rudeness and arrogance are not needed. Smile, enjoy yourself, and keep that cash in your wallet!

How to get the coupons you need

I recently have been in desperate need of stackable OFF bug spray coupons for Mr G since he goes through a bottle a week at work, but have been unable to get enough. SO... I appealed to the "couponing community" on Facebook. There are several groups, but the one I frequent the most is Frugal Edmonton Mama . She is based in this area and has a billion followers (ok, maybe not a billion). Anyways, I appealed to her followers on Facebook and within 30 seconds had replies to make some trades.

As a result of these trades (I traded Enfamil and huggies), I was able to get Mr G. 6 bottles of Deep Woods off for *FREE*!!!

Since this is such a valuable tool I would like to start some more regular trades. If you are interested in making some trades, please post in the comments and we'll see how well this goes. I will start a new tab for trades up by printables if we have the demand.

What coupons are you seeking? Are you overwhelmed with one certain coupon (I am, I have a StacK of Scrubbing bubbles/Fantastic).

Let the trades begin!

How to save money planning a Wedding.

Weddings... Beautiful brides, dashing grooms, gorgeous flowers, good food, dancing... and LARGE BILLS! So sure, this blog is mainly about couponing and how to save yourself a ton of cash every week buying everyday items, but tis the season for weddings, and frankly, they are ridiculously expensive!

Realistically, you have to know your limits. Are you crafty? Do you suffer panic attacks when you come within 15 feet of a crafty store? Do you work 16 hours a day and have no time? There is ABSOLUTELY NOTHING WRONG with "outsourcing" wedding planning and all the "jooys" that go along with it, however, I so suggest you do several price comparisons to avoid overpaying (and in some cases, grossly over paying).

Here are some money saving tips when planning a wedding.

Invitations
Many companies have come out with gorgeous print-your-own invitation kits. They're stunning, and man do they save you a lot. When the Mr and I were married almost 5 yrs ago, there were very few kits available, so I made ours using program paper, and hand tied ribbons. Beautiful, yes, big giant pain in the rear, absolutely. These new kits are easy peasy, and compared to $4-$10 PER invitation/save the date/reply from a printer, this is a great way to save some cash to use elsewhere.

Flowers
LOOK AROUND!! Determine what you like and the colors, and think about timing. For example, a friend of mine was married in the month of February, and wanted red roses as the flowers. KA-CHING!! Bad month for roses unfortunately! Do the legwork here, not only to save the money, but to see if you like the florist's style.

Groom's Attire
This one is great. This time of year there are always coupons out in wedding magazines for groom wear (tux). Lots of stores will also do a "Rent X number, and get the Groom for free". This one has been around forever, but is still a great deal!

Decor/Centerpieces
This is where you *need* to know your limits. I am a crafter, always have been, so we did most of this ourselves. Start with your "theme". Say you are having a fall wedding, time permitting, stock up when things go on clearance for the seasonal turnover. Michaels is fantastic for great clearance sales (and they have disount coupons). Little things add up, ribbon, vases etc. This is where frequent walk throughs will find you wonderful bargains!

I couls break this down further, but really the most important thing you need to know is that retails WANT to make the most profit they can, however that mosst certainly doesn't mean you need to pay retail. Look around, and dont be afraid to say "No sorry, that is too much for us", many times things can be adjusted to work for you and your budget!

Do you have any money saving tips for a bride-to-be? Share below!

FREE Glasses!!

Clearly Contacts.ca is doing it again! Today only, they are giving away 10000 FREE pairs of glasses! (some exceptions apply, make sure the frame doesn't say "Coupons not applicable).

Go to their site HERE and use promo code FREECANADA69 . You *MAY* have to pay for lenses depending on your prescription, but regardless this is a great deal. Mr. G is currently sporting 3 free pairs from last months promos!

Which frames did you pick?

Are you getting married??

Do you need a billion stamps? Well, here's the deal for you!

JUNE 10-16 ONLY, Rexall Pharmacy's are having a 10% sale on stamps (books). Limit of 3 per person, but make a couple trips and you'll save yourself some cash that can go towards, say, a diamon in that wedding band! :-D Or flowers, or, or, or....
More on how to save big $$ on weddings tomorrow...

Stay tuned!

Want to know what $10.00 at Shoppers buys you?

Well... when you hit the clearance section with your coupons, you walk away very happy!
Here's my breakdown:

- 1 pkg Pampers Easy Ups @ $5.50, used brandsaver insert coupon save $3.00 =$2.50

- 3 FULL SIZED Gillete hair and body wash @ $1.60 ea, used brandsaver insert coupon save $5.00 WUB 3 = MADE $0.20 (the cashier k'd the overage)

- 2 Two pack Dove deodorant @ $1.85 ea. Used tearpad Save $2.00 WUB 2 Dove products (found at shoppers by the Dove bar soap) = $1.70 (that is $0.43/deodorant!!)

- 3 Southern butter pecan coffee creamer (smaller size) @ $2.00 ea (not sure why these were clearanced?!) No coupon, but if I dont get coffee in the am with creamer, well, let's just say it's ugly... = $6.00 (still saved $3.75)

RETAIL COST OF THIS (plus taxes) would have been $ 64.50!!!!!!!

I was so happy, and really I lucked out! They were filling the clearance shelves as we were there. I didnt even have my coupon binder, but fortunately I had just picked up a couple brandsaver inserts from my Mother in Law (THANKS MA!!) soI was able to use those. We're going back tomorrow because there was a TON of clearance Aveeno stuff (which is odd) so I'm going back to get a few free bars of aveeno soap and face wash using THIS . The soaps were only !$1.15 each, so my overage (if I get it again) will cover the remainder of the face wash!!

Have you spotted any CRAZY deals lately? Anything jump at you from a cleance shelf? Please share your deals and tips!

Well, it was bound to happen... P&G (brandsaver) has changed the wording on their coupons so they can no longer be stacked. GRR... No more free Pampers! You can still stack Huggies (Kimberly Clarke) though, and fortunately we can use either for Thing 2!

But enough Negative Nellie news...

New Coupons released

If you already ordered your brandsaver coupons, you'll be happy to know that yesterday they released some more! I certainly wasn't expecting THIS . Websaver also did

Check em out and send in your request. Fingers crossed that Canada Post keeps bringing them to us!!

The Number 1 place to search for GREAT deals

THE CLEARANCE SECTION(S)!!

Clearance sections of grocery stores are wonderful sources for great deals (especially when using coupons). Superstore, Shoppers Drug Mart and Wal-Mart, always have some great stuff, and quite often they are just doing a product turnover or they just need the room.

Superstore and Wal-Mart have several different clearance sections. There is always one or two in housewares, pharmacy area (occasionally one in the beauty part too), toys, baby stuff, clothes, grocery (produce area usually), meat (perfect if you are stocking the freezer), and my personal favorite; general grocery (laundry/cleaning/etc). Shoppers always has a shelf at the very back of the store that holds their clearance stuff, but ask at your store, Devon actually has 2 areas.

Yesterday armed with some coupons that expire this week, I hit up Wal-Mart and the general grocery clearance aisle. I was able to grab a bunch of stuff we regularily use for a fraction of its retail cost.

- 6 Glade fabric refreshers @ $1.98 ea, used 3 B1G1 coupons. (reg price $5.97)

- 1 Greenworks combo cleaner (largest size) with bonus dishsoap @ $4.00, used Save.ca $1.50 coupon (reg price $5.97)

- 1 Clorox 2 stain fighter @ $5.97 (on sale), used Websaver $2.00 off

- 2 Arm and Hammer whitening toothpaste @ 0.99 ea, used save $1.00 WUB 2 (reg price $2.37 ea)

- 3 Gillete foamy shave cream (mini size) @ 1.27 ea, used save $5.00 WUB 3 Gillete (from June 1 brandsaver) for overage

- 2 Febreeze Ait Effects @ $3.00, used P&G B1G1 free (reg price $3.97 ea)

- 1 Oasis Nutrisource juice @ $2.97, used Go Coupons save $0.75. (**sidenote, this juice was litlerally $1.50 cheaper before coupons at walmart. Weird)

-Also purchased bagels, granola bars, 2 1L juices for the 'Things', a new toothbrush for Thing 1, and a couple cans of tomatoes etc.

Grand total was 29 items for $30.46. Nice! Clearance works, and requires an extra 2 mins each trip to cheack each section!

Stacking coupons

Happy Sunday everyone, and sorry for delaying this post. I was feeling like I was run over by a Mack truck yesterday, but we're all good to go today.

Let's talk Coupon stacking! Actually let's rewind a second, and let me explain exactly what coupon stacking is. "Stacking" is when you use more than 1 coupon, at the same time, for one product. Here in Edmonton/Area, there are only 2 stores that I am aware of that allow coupon stacking, London Drugs, and Save on Foods (please note though that SOF just started to allow stacking, so please be patient with your cashiers).

What is the benefit to stacking coupons? you ask...
Well, for starters, you will end up saving much more than just a 1 coupon transaction, and in many cases, your item(s) will be free. FREE!! How do you feel about free shampoo, laundry detergent, diapers (a huge deal for parents), formula, etc etc...

Now I promised you when I started this blog that couponing wasn't hard, and this, while it requires a smidge more understanding of the fine print, is relatively simple to master. So here we go....

Ok, let's say that product 'X' is on sale for $15.00. You have several coupons for this product so you want to stack them to get 'X" for free (or very very little). What you need to be aware of is the fine print on the bottom or back of the coupon. Key phrases that tell you you CANNOT stack them are: "CANNOT BE COMBINED WITH ANY OTHER COUPON OFFER", and you obviously cannot use expired coupons. Now, the other main thing to remember is that you cannot use a duplicate coupon (such as 2 from the same insert, or website, etc).

Here's a step by step of our example, Product X:
- "Product X" sale price = $15.00
- 1 coupon you found in a magazine for $5.00 off
- 1 coupon ordered from one of the websites for $5.00 off
- 1 coupon found in a newspaper insert (Smart Source etc) for $3.00 off
- 1 coupon from a tearpad found in stores for $2.00 off
Total paid for 'Product X' = FREE

I *believe* London Drugs will cap you at 4 coupons per item, but they will also not allow you to exceed the value of the product either so in some cases you may end up paying a small amount.

Stacking, I have found works SO well when buying certain items. Diapers, wipes, laundry soap, toothpaste, feminine products, Asvil/Tylenol (both for adults and kids) and household cleaners. Makeup can become dirt cheap too!

I am hoping I explained this clearly for everyone, but if you have ANY questions, please dont hesitate to ask in the comments below! This is one of the best ways to save big $$ and get freebies.

My Stockpile/Basement "Mini Mart"

I did some re-organizing tonight and I am shocked how quickly my little basement pantry is filling up.

Everything was either FREE or was purchased for very very little using coupons. Not shown are several shaving creams, toothpastes, and mens/womens deodorant. This has been collected over the last 3-4 weeks only!! It's very easy once you get started!

Have to say, Mr. G and I were pretty impressed!!

Have you started your stockpile yet?? What is a main staple for you?

Hot Deals at No Frills this week

No Frills has some red hot deals this week in their '$1, $2, $3' Sale.

How to MAKE money and get free stuff using coupons

Sometimes a coupon deal comes along that is just so fabulous that an avid couponer gets positively giddy! For me personally, this happens when stores pay me to take the product home!

Walmart's coupon policy, in part, states that "When coupon value exceeds the price of the item: the excess amount can be given as cash or can be applied toward the basket purchase , at the customer's choice". WOW! Now as an example, say Ziplock bags are on sale for $1.48 per box, and I have a coupon that says 'Save $4.00 WUB 2', that means that for every 2 boxes of Ziplock bags I buy, Walmart will PAY ME $1.04.

With the overage produced, You can purchase your items that are not as "coupon friendly" such a meat and produce. Pretty exciting stuff when you realize how this can work for you!

Now, before you get too excited, please realize that not all stores will do this! Wal-Mart and Giant Tiger will allow you to have/use the overage, Shoppers Drug Mart will occasionally, and some others will mark the coupon down to match the actual price, but you would still get the product free.

This weekend there are some freebies available. Canadian Tire is doing their annual scratch ticket, and you can save $5.00 (or win a BBQ, or save $5.00 at M&M Meats). With that $5.00 you could get free Tide (at $4.47 + something to take you over the $5.00), Bounty Basics 6 pk papertowel (at $4.97 with something small to take you over $5.00).

The biggest bonus is that a lot of the coupons that you can print yourself, (and I'm working on that list for you), can be printed multiple times, thus allowing you to stock up and maximize your savings. Always remember to check your store's clearance sections, you can often times get better-than-best-sale prices, and still use a coupon for extra value.

Today is new flyer day, so as I go through I will post any hot deals I find!

Tomorrow, we cover COUPON STACKING!! That is using multiple coupons for 1 product resulting in near and free items (hello Diapers!)

Where do you get your coupons from Mrs G?

I have been asked this question a _LOT_. The answer is from a few different sources. No, I'm not dumpster diving, but I am not above asking family for any extras they might have!

Here are my main sources of coupons:

Online.
There are several websites that mail you coupons. These are free sites, and with a total of 3 email addresses in this house, that gives us 3 copies of each coupon. Easy peasy! The sites in particular are as follows:

BRANDSAVER
SAVE.CA
WEBSAVER
GO COUPONS

There are also several "hidden" links within both Websaver and Save.ca. I'll explain more about those later.

Newspaper Inserts
These are sent every once and awhile. Popular names are such as "Red Plum", "Smart Source" and "Val-Pak". These are a wonderful source as many of these can be stacked (use more than one coupon) at sifferent stores, many times resulting in free (or almost) products. To get additional copies of these, I hit up friends and family. These are found in your daily newspapers (Edmonton Journal/Sun) on specified weekends.

Store Tear Pads
These are the coupons you randomly find while walking through stores. They are always with the products (exception is Superstore, they can also be found up front).

Manufacture Coupons
Did you know that only 3% of manufacture's coupons are ever reedemed? For that reason, calling up/emailing your favorite companies and requesting coupons can result in some great deals! What's the worst they can say? No.

Online Printable coupons
Many times these are GOLDEN! Quite often, you can print more than one, making them perfect to stack, or for a great sale, allow you to stock up!

Assorted coupons
Magazines, newspapers, and stick on coupons are a great savings. As are mail in rebates!

Keeping your eyes open for any and all cooupons is the way to start your pile, sometimes a product makes you money, and that is alwys a great thing. We;ll talk about "making money" off coupons tomorrow!

Welcome Friends!!

Welcome friends both new and old to Mrs G's Coupon adventures!

I recently learned how to coupon (and extreme coupon) in Canada, and want to share the ins and outs with you all! This site will take you to coupon links, freebies and printable at home coupons. I will also show you how to stack coupons and promotions to help make the _MOST_ out of every dollar you spend at the store.

Please feel free to contact me with questions or even to point me in the direction of coupons/freebies I may have missed!

Grab those coupons, and your grocery bags, let's head out on this aventure!
